During a promotional tour for his latest film, George Clooney openly shared his opinions about Adam Sandler.
In the forthcoming drama Jay Kelly, Sandler portrays the dynamic and pivotal character of the film’s manager, while Clooney takes on the role of an aging cinema icon. This casting places Clooney and Sandler in a unique actor-manager relationship within the story.
Talking to Vanity Fair, Clooney praised Sandler’s acting prowess, emphasizing his ability to transcend beyond his comedic persona.
“In this project, Adam showcases his profound and emotional acting capabilities more than in any of his previous works. I constantly reminded everyone on set not to treat him as ‘Sand Man’ or just a silly comic. He’s truly a remarkable, talented actor,” Clooney explained. “His usual roles in major comedic films often overshadow his capacity for more serious, poignant roles like those in Uncut Gems, which reveal his versatility. He’s not merely a great comedian.”
The Netflix drama Jay Kelly, directed by Marriage Story‘s Noah Baumbach, follows an aging star facing a crisis as he confronts the end of his career after a lifetime of immense success, constant public attention, and critiques for seemingly playing variations of himself. Clooney, whose real-life experiences mirror the challenges of his character, plays this role with a hint of irony.
Clooney dismissed criticisms about his acting range with indifference. “Do people think I only play myself? I don’t care,” he declared. “There aren’t many actors my age who get the opportunity to perform in both major comedies, like O Brother [Where Art Thou?], and intense dramas like Michael Clayton or Syriana. If they say I’m just playing myself, then so be it.”
He also shared a memorable line from the film during the interview, reflecting on the complexity of such a task: “Have you ever tried playing yourself? It’s hard to do.”
