The ex-footballer spent two seasons playing in Scotland with Hamilton and Partick Thistle
Lucas Akins, a professional footballer, has been given a 14-month prison sentence by Leeds Crown Court for his role in a car accident that led to the death of a cyclist in Huddersfield due to careless driving.
The tragic event took place in March 2022 and claimed the life of 33-year-old cyclist Adrian Daniel, who died from his injuries 10 days after being hit by Akins’ Mercedes.
Akins, formerly of Hamilton Academical and on loan to Partick Thistle, will spend half of his sentence in prison before he is eligible for early release under licence. Additionally, he has been handed a one-year suspension from driving.
During the sentencing, Judge Alex Menary told the 36-year-old Akins: “I am convinced you are unlikely to reoffend. There is strong mitigation on a personal level. Yet, the only suitable punishment is immediate imprisonment.”
Akins admitted his guilt in court on March 4.
Following the incident, Akins continued his football career at Mansfield Town, participating in several matches for the League One club.
With over 600 games in his career across the English and Scottish leagues, including two seasons at Burton Albion in the EFL Championship before moving to Mansfield in 2021, the 36-year-old also has seven international caps for Grenada, having recently played against Russia in March.
Prosecutor Carmel Pearson KC described the fatal incident, stating: “Adrian Daniel was descending Huddersfield Road on his bike, approaching the same junction.”
“He was equipped with a head-mounted camera that captured his ride, showing him in stable condition.”
“At the T-junction of Crossland Factory Lane and Huddersfield Road, which has a give-way sign, the defendant, although driving slowly, proceeded to pull out at the junction and collided with Adrian Daniel.”
“It was too late for Adrian Daniel to react, and he sustained a severe head injury that ultimately proved fatal.”
