FBI unveils first photos tied to Nancy Guthrie investigation: call for tips

By Emily Anderson

The FBI has published the first images of a person of interest linked to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie.

FBI Director Kash Patel shared photos and three short video segments on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday showing someone apparently interfering with a security camera mounted at Nancy Guthrie’s front door. In the footage the individual is masked, wearing gloves and carrying a backpack; they also seem to have a holstered firearm.

Patel said the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been coordinating closely with private-sector partners over the past eight days to try to recover images and video from Nancy’s home that might have been lost, corrupted or otherwise inaccessible — including material affected by the removal of recording devices. He explained the newly posted clips were retrieved from residual data found in backend systems. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office issued a matching statement.

Savannah Guthrie reposted one of the images on her own social accounts, urging the public to help and saying, “We believe she is still alive. Bring her home.” She asked anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.

Nancy’s family filed a missing-person report on Feb. 1. According to investigators, she was last seen the night before — at approximately 9:45 p.m. — after finishing dinner at the Tucson, Arizona, home of her daughter Annie Guthrie.

Since Nancy’s apparent abduction, multiple news organizations have reported receiving alleged ransom notes, which the FBI has been examining. Authorities confirmed on Friday that they were probing a “new message” related to Nancy’s case.

On Monday, Savannah posted a video to Instagram describing the situation as “another week of this nightmare.” She appealed directly to the public, saying her family believes Nancy remains out there and asking for anyone’s assistance. “Law enforcement is working tirelessly, around the clock trying to bring her home, trying to find her,” she said, adding that her mother had been taken and her whereabouts remain unknown.

Savannah implored followers — including those who don’t live nearby — to alert authorities if they notice anything unusual or have any information at all. “We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help,” she said.

She closed the message by thanking people for their prayers, expressing her family’s faith that those prayers are reaching Nancy and that, even in this darkest moment, they believe God is supporting and protecting her.
