Family Devastated by Toddler’s Sudden Death: Tribute to a ‘Cheeky Little Chappy’

Adam Quirk reflects on his son Freddie’s impactful yet brief life, touching many hearts along the way.

A young couple recently expressed their grief over the sudden loss of their 18-month-old son, Freddie Quirk, who hailed from Netherton, Merseyside. Adam Quirk, Freddie’s father, described him as a spirited child who embraced life with enthusiasm despite the challenges he faced.

Freddie tragically passed away on Monday, February 23, after his mother, Abbie Quirk, discovered him unresponsive. Adam, aged 28, shared with the Liverpool ECHO, “He epitomized the spirited, cheeky little guy. He had a zest for life, lighting up any room with his smile and spreading love wherever he went.”

Freddie was born with an imperforate anus, a condition that means the child is born without an opening to pass stool. This condition causes the rectum to end in a blind pouch rather than connecting to the anus.

Freddie underwent surgery at just one day old to address his condition and later required a stoma bag. Despite these health challenges, Adam remarked that Freddie never let these obstacles hinder his spirits. “He was an incredibly resilient little boy, undeterred by any obstacle. He was always climbing and running about, just a smart, joyful child,” Adam recounted.

Adam recalled the heart-wrenching day of Freddie’s death, “Abbie found him by herself. I was on my way to work, just a stop away on the train when I had to rush back. They informed me of his passing during my return.”

“The suddenness of it all has been a shock, as he was only slightly unwell the day before. Though he vomited a bit, he was still hydrating adequately. We didn’t feed him much to avoid aggravating his stomach, but he remained playful and wanted our company, which wasn’t out of the ordinary,” Adam explained.

The exact cause of Freddie’s death remains undetermined. “We’re still awaiting the results from the coroner’s tests, which they told us could take six to nine months,” Adam noted.

During this challenging time, Adam and Abbie have found solace in the support from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. In honor of the care Freddie received, Lydia Pennington, a close friend of Abbie’s, plans to participate in the Mersey Tunnel 10K to raise funds for the hospital’s charity later this year.

Adam mentioned that a friend from university, Lydia, residing in Blackpool, expressed interest in running the Mersey Tunnel event to support fundraising efforts. “They surpassed the initial £150 goal within the first half hour,” Adam said.

Abbie, aged 29, added, “The target was then increased to £500, which was reached within another hour. It’s truly heartwarming.”

“We can’t praise Alder Hey enough. We were transferred there from the Women’s hospital on Freddie’s first day when he underwent surgery,” Adam shared.

“The care provided by the nurses and doctors was exceptional. They were there when we needed comfort and gave us space when necessary. It’s hard to imagine going through this anywhere else,” he continued.

Adam revealed a touching tradition they plan to establish in Freddie’s memory, “On Freddie’s birthday every year, July 1, we’ll continue to buy him presents as usual, but we’ll donate them all to Alder Hey.”

“They’ve done so much for us, and it’s only right that we give back. Words can’t express how crucial Alder Hey has been for us,” Adam concluded.
