Acclaimed Art Director Jeremy Railton Passes Away

Jeremy Railton, an Emmy-winning art director and production designer known for his work with iconic musical talents such as Michael Jackson and Fleetwood Mac, as well as his contribution to television shows like Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, has passed away.

Railton died at his residence in Three Rivers, California, on Wednesday at the age of 80, reported by Live Design. His close friend, Sara Boucher, confirmed his passing, although the specific cause of death remains undisclosed.

“With a heavy heart, I must inform that our beloved Jeremy Railton departed this world yesterday, comforted by his dear friends Ryan and Brian,” Boucher announced. “Jeremy was a genuine soul, a passionate artist, and a gracious gentleman who devoted himself to others. He was a visionary like no other, crafting magical experiences that touched hearts. He embodied the wisdom of Kenobi, the magic of Dumbledore, and the kindness of the Blue Fairy. My love for him was immense. We have truly lost a remarkable man.”

Railton was born in August 1944 on a ranch in Zimbabwe. He pursued Fine Art at the University of Cape Town and later continued his education in England, according to PLSN. His early career began in the British film industry while he was still a student, and he later moved to Los Angeles. There, he collaborated with notable figures such as Christopher Isherwood and assisted Cecil Beaton on a Los Angeles production of My Fair Lady at the prestigious Mark Taper Forum.

Over the years, Railton built an impressive career in both television and film, working as an art director, costume designer, and production designer. He received widespread acclaim for his work, including as a production designer in Paramount’s The Two Jakes. His outstanding talent earned him four Emmy Awards, including the 1987 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Costume Design for the children’s series Zoobilee Zoo and the 1988 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction/Set Direction/Scenic Design for Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. He also received Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Art Direction for a Variety or Music Program and Outstanding Art Direction for the 2002 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony. Furthermore, he was honored with an Art Director’s Guild Award and the Buzz Price THEA Award.

Railton’s influence extended into the music industry, where he became one of the most sought-after art directors and production designers. His portfolio includes collaborations with a host of celebrated artists like Rod Stewart, Barbra Streisand, Phil Collins, Cher, Janet Jackson, Neil Diamond, Ozzy Osbourne, Diana Ross, and many others.

The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) expressed its condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of longtime TEA member Jeremy Railton. Jeremy was a creative force who inspired everyone around him. We are honored to have had him as a member, colleague, and friend. May he rest in peace.”
