Dr. Phil’s Company Faces Escalating Bankruptcy Issues
The financial troubles of Dr. Phil’s enterprise continue to mount dramatically.
Today, a lawsuit was initiated in a federal court in Texas by Trinity Broadcasting Network. The lawsuit claims that Dr. Phil McGraw and his company, Merit Street Media, entered into a contract valued at $500 million over 10 years with the Christian TV network. Despite this agreement, they failed to produce even a single episode of his renowned TV show.
Merit Street Media sought protection under Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 2, a move that came less than two years after McGraw established the company. In August 2024, the company dismissed more than a third of its workforce, followed by additional layoffs in June of the subsequent year.
The channel, Merit, was established by McGraw who had ambitiously claimed it would become “one of the most widely distributed startup networks in modern history.” The network showcased well-known personalities including Nancy Grace, Steve Harvey, and Bear Grylls, with McGraw himself as one of the features. It was created as a collaborative venture between McGraw and Trinity Broadcasting.
In a statement to THR, McGraw’s representative countered the allegations from TBN, asserting that 214 new episodes of Dr. Phil were broadcast on Merit, challenging the claim as completely untrue.
Merit Street has countered by accusing TBN of failing to fulfill their operational agreements within the joint network. They allege that soon after the network was launched, Trinity Broadcasting started to “abuse its power as a controlling shareholder.” This abuse was purportedly demonstrated by forcing Merit into costly distribution deals rather than utilizing Merit’s planned network of local TV stations.
Moreover, Merit Street has accused TBN of engaging in unethical practices by mandating that the new network’s shows be produced using TBN’s own in-house studios, a move that supposedly compromised the network’s quality by delivering “shoddy production services.”
The lawsuit from TBN not only demands a judicial decree to acquire all content from Merit Street but also seeks to compel McGraw to relinquish the rights to his library of older Dr. Phil episodes.
