Dancing With the Stars’ Judge Almost Destroys Wheel of Fortune’s Iconic Wheel: Ryan Seacrest Spills the Beans

By Emily Anderson

The cast of Dancing With the Stars recently stirred up excitement on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.

In a recent discussion with USA Today, Ryan Seacrest shared an amusing incident involving Derek Hough, a judge on DWTS. Hough, along with fellow judge Bruno Tonioli and professional dancer Jenna Johnson, participated in the celebrity version of the iconic game show last month. During their appearance, Hough’s playful behavior almost led to disaster when he nearly damaged the famous Wheel of Fortune wheel.

“During a commercial break, Hough was playfully jumping on the wheel’s center while urging Bruno to spin him around, reminiscent of a cake decoration,” Seacrest recounted. He added that they had to intervene, cautioning, “Please don’t do that. There’s only one wheel, and if it breaks, we’re in big trouble.”

Seacrest also mentioned the physicality of the DWTS group, noting, “We had to remind them to stick to the perimeter of the set,” but he acknowledged that their energetic nature brought an enjoyable dynamic to the show.

Adding a personal touch to the episode, Seacrest, who had previously dated Hough’s sister and Dancing With the Stars host Julianne Hough between 2010 and 2013, mentioned that his prior relationship with the Hough family enriched the overall camaraderie. “Knowing someone, or being friends with them, definitely makes it easier to have a bit of fun and tease each other on the show,” he explained.

Hough’s lively participation seemed to work in his favor as he ended up winning the episode on September 26, securing $63,350 for the charity Feeding America.

Hough, who joined the Dancing With the Stars judging panel in 2020, has a rich history with the show, having won six Mirrorball Trophies as a professional dancer in previous seasons. Reflecting on his long-standing involvement with the dance competition, Hough expressed his appreciation in an April interview with PEOPLE. “This show is a continuous blessing,” he remarked. “Its longevity and ongoing success really speak to the heart and soul of what we do, not to mention the incredible cast that plays a huge part in it all.”
