‘Degrassi’ Star Michael Blake Passes Away at 53: Fans Mourn the Loss

The Canadian entertainment community is mourning the loss of esteemed actor Michael Blake, who has passed away at the age of 53.

Born in Toronto, Blake gained recognition for his role as Paul in the popular television series Degrassi High. He continued to build his career with roles in acclaimed shows such as The Expanse and Murdoch Mysteries, as well as in the Netflix original movie Slumberland, where he starred opposite Jason Momoa.

Despite his success on screen, Blake’s primary passion lay in the world of theatre. He was a celebrated member of the Stratford Festival, one of North America’s most prestigious repertory theatres, where he showcased his talent in 25 productions over ten seasons. His portrayals of Shakespearean characters were particularly revered.

Among the notable characters he embodied with the touring company were Othello in Othello, Macduff in Macbeth, Don John in Much Ado About Nothing, Cominius in Coriolanus, and Albany in King Lear, among others.

The Stratford Festival took to Facebook to express their sorrow and commemorate Blake’s illustrious career.

“We are profoundly saddened to announce the death of Michael Blake, a beloved friend and esteemed colleague,” read the statement from the festival. “Michael was among the most talented actors of his generation, bringing life to a wide array of roles with a mastery and grace that was truly exceptional.”

The festival also revealed that they will honor Blake’s memory with a special performance scheduled for the 2026 season.

“Michael’s performances were not only skillful but also deeply authentic and engaging,” remarked Antoni Cimolino, the Artistic Director of the festival. “He had a unique ability to make his fictional realities compelling and genuine. His contributions were not only significant in the realm of art but were also cherished on a personal level. He was an integral part of our theatre family, and his absence will be profoundly felt,” he added.
