Carrie Underwood is embracing her original hair color!
The 42-year-old American Idol judge surprised her fans on Monday by revealing a significant change to her appearance. She traded her well-known light blonde hair for a more natural brownish blonde shade.
“I haven’t seen my natural hair color since I was around 12 years old,” Underwood shared in a caption on Instagram alongside her hair transformation post. “I figured it was about time to try it out again.”
She expressed gratitude to her hairstylist for assisting her in rediscovering her roots, and seemed delighted with her new hair color, which she playfully dubbed “Bronde” in her post, along with the tag “New Old Me.”
Underwood has previously admitted to having reservations about altering her hair color.
In a 2012 interview with Refinery 29, she commented, “I’d love to experiment more with my hair color. I’ve always had blonde hair! The issue is, I’m concerned about shocking people – for instance, if I went brunette, I wouldn’t want everyone thinking I’ve turned grim or serious.”
She also reflected, “I wish I had begun experimenting with different hair colors earlier on. That way, it wouldn’t be such a surprise to people if I chose to do something drastic now.”
Underwood first showcased her golden blonde locks during her winning stint on American Idol Season 4 in 2005, and maintained similar styles while judging the show’s 23rd season earlier this year.
Regarding her future on American Idol, Underwood remained non-committal in a recent discussion with Entertainment Tonight following the Season 23 finale in May. “I don’t know!” she exclaimed. “There’s a lot to consider.”
Meanwhile, fellow judge Luke Bryan expressed confidence that Underwood would return to the judging panel next season.
“She really enjoyed her time,” Bryan mentioned to Taste of Country Nights about Underwood’s debut season as a judge. He hinted at a positive outlook for her return in Season 24, saying, “My prediction would be highly favorable.”
“Last year was truly incredible with Carrie, [fellow judge Lionel Richie], and [host Ryan Seacrest],” he added. “The main goal is to just have fun with American Idol and enjoy the time with the contestants.”
