Following a brutal assault, Anita Rose was found by pedestrians and urgently taken to the hospital.
A fugitive man avoiding capture and living off-the-grid is accused of the brutal murder of a grandmother while she was out walking her dog in a “vicious attack”, as stated in court proceedings.
57-year-old Anita Rose sustained “multiple kicks, stamps, and strikes to her face, head, and body,” according to prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC during a trial at Ipswich Crown Court. The defendant, 56-year-old Roy Barclay, who has no permanent residence, refutes the murder charges.
In court today, Mr. Paxton presented the case that mother-of-six Anita departed her home in Brantham, Suffolk, to walk her dog Bruce on July 24 last year. She was discovered by people passing by but tragically passed away four days later at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge on July 28, as reported by the Mirror.
Mr. Paxton detailed that “Anita Rose was subjected to a vicious and brutal attack with numerous kicks, stamps, and blows being inflicted upon her face, head, and body after leaving home and before 6:25 that morning.
“She was discovered by passers-by, who promptly sought help, but on July 28, Anita Rose succumbed to her injuries in Addenbrooke’s Hospital,” he added.
He noted, “no eyewitnesses witnessed the incident.”
He further explained: “Roy Barclay lived primarily in the countryside, moving through fields and lanes, sleeping in various makeshift camps. He chose to live off-grid because for two years, Roy Barclay had been unlawfully at large.
“He had been evading the police and authorities to avoid being recalled to prison,” the prosecutor stated. He also mentioned that a pink jacket worn by Ms. Rose on the day she was attacked was found at one of Barclay’s temporary camps.
The prosecutor claimed Barclay kept the jacket “as a trophy” and it had Barclay’s “semen on the neckline”. Mr. Paxton indicated that Barclay’s walking boots, which “served as the murder weapon”, were discovered at the same camp.
Mr. Paxton also mentioned that Anita’s phone case was found there, and her Samsung earbuds were located at a different makeshift camp Barclay had used. The barrister noted that Barclay “carries dog biscuits with him and is a dog lover”.
He stated that Barclay wrapped the dog lead around Ms. Rose’s leg “we claim to prevent Bruce (the dog) from running away”. “Paramedics found Bruce the dog’s lead tightly wound around Anita’s leg,” he stated.
Mr. Paxton added that Barclay conducted various internet searches after the attack, including “how are outdoor items swabbed for DNA” and “can barbed wire be swabbed for DNA”.
The trial, expected to last eight weeks, continues.
