Emma Devon, aged 32, faced a grueling three days when her four-month-old daughter, Rosie, came close to having her toe amputated after hair became tightly wound around it.
A mother has issued a strong caution to other parents following a harrowing experience where her infant daughter’s toe nearly required amputation due to a hair entanglement. Emma Devon, a 32-year-old resident of Cumbernauld, endured a distressing three-day episode with her four-month-old daughter, Rosie, after discovering a hair tightly wrapped around the baby’s toe on December 16.
Emma and her partner, James, also 32, were preparing their daughter for bed when they noticed her big toe was unusually swollen and red. They suspect that the hair had been in Rosie’s sock since that morning.
Unable to remove the hair themselves, Emma and James rushed to A&E at University Hospital Monklands. They were subsequently directed to The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow for emergency surgery. Doctors there informed them that Rosie was just hours away from potentially losing her toe due to restricted blood flow caused by the tightly wrapped hair.
Two days later, Rosie was discharged from the hospital.
Emma shared with the Record: “I never imagined it could be so serious. My eldest son kept asking if Rosie was going to lose her toe, and I reassured him not to worry overly. However, the consultant later explained that the situation was indeed grave and could have led to amputation. He noted that such injuries are surprisingly common in babies and toddlers up to two years old.”
“We keep replaying the event in our minds, shocked at how a seemingly innocent situation could turn so perilous,” Emma added.
The doctors at Monklands initially attempted to use hair removal cream but were unable to procure it. They then tried stitch cutters, but the toe’s severe inflammation made this approach ineffective too. After consulting pediatric services, Rosie was seen by a specialist who managed to remove some of the trapped hair using various instruments.
However, as the toe started bleeding and became more irritated, an emergency surgical intervention was necessary. During the procedure, it was discovered that the hair had embedded deeper than anticipated, necessitating further incisions into Rosie’s toe to fully remove the entangled hair.
Emma is now advocating for parents to wash infant socks and mittens separately to prevent similar incidents. Although difficult to completely avoid, medical professionals recommend keeping hair removal cream on hand as an initial remedy for such situations.
Emma concluded, “Save yourself and your child a lot of pain and distress by having hair removal cream available at home. The last thing I want is for other parents to endure this ordeal or for a child to suffer a toe amputation.”
