Breaking News: Music Icon D’Angelo Dies at 51: Industry Mourns Sudden Loss

The music world mourns the loss of renowned R&B singer D’Angelo, who passed away on Tuesday morning due to pancreatic cancer at the age of 51.

In a heartfelt statement released to Variety, the family of the Grammy-winning artist expressed their deep sorrow: “The light of our beloved star has faded from this world… After a brave and enduring fight with cancer, we are devastated to share that Michael D’Angelo Archer, adored globally as D’Angelo, has left us on this day, October 14th, 2025.”

“While we grieve that he leaves behind only memories for his family, we remain profoundly thankful for the impactful musical legacy he bequeaths. We kindly request privacy during this challenging period, yet we encourage everyone to join in both mourning his loss and celebrating the musical treasures he bestowed upon us,” the family added.

Michael Eugene Archer, better known as D’Angelo, made a spectacular entrance into the music industry in 1995 with his debut album Brown Sugar. The album soared to number four on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and achieved platinum status within its first year.

During his illustrious career, D’Angelo earned four Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album for Voodoo in 2001 and Black Messiah in 2016, as well as Best R&B Song for “Really Love” and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” in the same year.

Over the years, D’Angelo collaborated with numerous prominent figures in the music industry, including Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Q-Tip, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Angie Stone, and Questlove.

Following the announcement of his death, several artists paid homage to D’Angelo on social media. Among them, Tyler the Creator, The Alchemist, and DJ Premier expressed their condolences.

“Such a tragic loss with the passing of D’angelo,” penned DJ Premier, who worked with D’Angelo on “Devil’s Pie” in 1998, on X (formerly Twitter). “We shared so many wonderful times. Will miss you dearly. Rest in Peace D. Love you KING.” Meanwhile, The Alchemist simply stated, “Man. Rest in peace D’ Angelo.”

D’Angelo is survived by his three children: two sons and a daughter.
