Local Emergency Teams Confirm Devastating News
Diogo Jota, a prominent forward for Liverpool, has tragically passed away at the age of 28 following a vehicular accident in Spain.
The accident occurred in Zamora, Spain on a Thursday morning, claiming Jota’s life.
At the time of the accident, Jota was in the car with his younger brother, Andre Silva, who is 26 years old.
This heartbreaking event took place just two weeks after Jota’s marriage to his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in Porto.
The emergency services in the Castilla and Leon area issued a statement regarding the incident: “The emergency operations center of Castilla y León (1-1-2) received multiple calls about a car accident at kilometer 65 on the A-52 highway, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. The vehicle was reported to be involved in a crash and was on fire.”
“Authorities including the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) were immediately notified,” the statement continued.
Medical teams dispatched to the scene, including a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and Primary Care Medical Staff from the Mombuey Health Center, confirmed the deaths of two individuals at the site.
Pedro Proenca, leader of the Portuguese Football Federation, expressed his profound sorrow: “The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are deeply saddened by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva this morning in Spain. Diogo Jota was more than an exceptional player with almost 50 caps for the national team; he was an extraordinary person, cherished by teammates and rivals alike, and a pillar of joy and leadership in our community.”
Proenca added, “On behalf of myself and the Portuguese Football Federation, I extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, where they played. We have requested UEFA to observe a minute’s silence before the upcoming match between our national team and Spain at the women’s European Championship this Thursday.”
“We mourn the loss of two champions. The deaths of Diogo and Andre Silva are profound losses to Portuguese football, and we are committed to honoring their legacy every day,” he concluded.
Last season, Jota contributed to Liverpool’s Premier League championship victory and was also part of the Portugal team that defeated Spain in the Nations League final in June.
