Bryant Gumbel Faces Health Scare
Former Today co-anchor Bryant Gumbel was reportedly rushed to the hospital following a severe health incident. The event occurred late yesterday evening.
A recent article by TMZ disclosed that the 77-year-old broadcaster was seen being carried out of his residential building in Manhattan on a stretcher around 9 PM on Monday. As of Tuesday afternoon, he was still receiving medical care at the hospital.
While details regarding his specific condition are currently sparse, a relative has informed TMZ that Gumbel is presently stable, though he remains under medical supervision for the issue that necessitated his hospitalization.
Gumbel’s Illustrious Broadcasting Career
Bryant Gumbel is celebrated for his extensive career as a television host, notably his 15-year tenure on NBC’s Today show, where he worked alongside notable figures such as Katie Couric and Jane Pauley. His time on the show earned him several Emmy awards and made him one of the program’s longest-serving hosts, trailing only behind Couric and Matt Lauer.
Beyond morning news, Gumbel made significant contributions to sports journalism. He developed and led HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, a pioneering sports news magazine show acclaimed for its investigative approach. The show was praised as the top sports television program during its run and brought Gumbel a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sports Emmys.
Another notable moment in Gumbel’s career was on September 11, 2001, when he was anchoring The Early Show. He was among the first journalists to deliver the news of the terrorist attacks to the public.
Additionally, Bryant Gumbel’s legacy in broadcasting is mirrored by his brother, Greg Gumbel, who also had a distinguished career in sports broadcasting. Greg made history as the first Black man to provide play-by-play and color commentary during the broadcast of Super Bowl XXXV in 2001. Sadly, Greg passed away from pancreatic cancer in late December at the age of 78.
The Gumbel family has indeed left a significant mark on the landscape of television broadcasting, particularly in the realms of news and sports.
