Keir Starmer Visits Scottish RAF Base: New Deal to Construct Norwegian Navy Warships Announced!

By Benjamin Harrison

The Prime Minister plans to engage with activists and Members of the Scottish Parliament in Glasgow to discuss measures his administration is taking to combat child poverty.

On his upcoming visit to Scotland this Thursday, Sir Keir Starmer, accompanied by his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Store, will make a stop at an RAF base to engage with military staff. This visit underscores the defense cooperation between the UK and Norway, highlighted by the recent agreement to construct Type 26 frigates for the Norwegian navy at the Clyde shipyards.

Further into his Thursday schedule, Sir Keir is set to hold discussions with local campaigners and MSPs in Glasgow, focusing on strategies his government is implementing to address child poverty. In anticipation of his visit, Sir Keir emphasized the significance of the recent Budget’s decision to eliminate the two-child benefit limit, criticizing those who prefer to stir political controversies or distractions.

Expressing his commitment, Sir Keir stated, “Scotland is always a priority in the decision-making process of my government. I made a promise, and I intend to keep it because I always consider the needs of Scots.”

Regarding the agreement with Norway on the frigate construction, Sir Keir highlighted, “We outperformed competitors globally to secure this deal, which will preserve thousands of jobs at the Clyde for many years. When jobs were threatened at Harland and Wolff, we intervened and supported the workforce.”

Addressing child poverty, he remarked, “Seeing over 200,000 children in poverty in Scotland when we have the means to alter this situation prompted us to act. Now, 27,000 families have more food on their tables than before.”

Sir Keir added, “There are always those who seek to create political strife and distractions – that is not our approach. Such actions don’t change lives; they only delay necessary changes.”

The UK Government’s decision to scrap the two-child cap is expected to benefit 95,000 children from low-income families in Scotland. On Friday, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with leaders of the devolved administrations at the British Irish Council summit in South Wales.
