Sir Bob Geldof Challenges Israeli Government Claims, Denies Gaza Famine is Unrelated to Israel’s Actions
Sir Bob Geldof has expressed strong disapproval towards the UK government’s response to the situation in Gaza, particularly disturbed by the visuals of malnourished children which he finds infuriating.
The founder of Band Aid has publicly denounced the Israeli government for their claims that they are not causing famine, stating, “They’re taunting starving, frantic, weary mothers with food,” indicating a manipulation of food supplies.
In an impassioned interview with Sky News, Sir Bob vociferously criticized how the UK can develop advanced supercomputers while, concurrently in Gaza, infants are forced to subsist on minimal sustenance like a teaspoon of salt and as much water as they can get. He exclaimed, “Shut up. What have we turned into that we can achieve such technological feats yet still allow this suffering to continue?”
Additionally, he expressed disappointment in the UK government, which he believes has not done enough to alleviate the crisis. He argued that recognizing Palestinian statehood, as urged by Labour leader Keir Starmer, would not address the immediate humanitarian crisis, labeling ongoing discussions as mere “virtue signaling.” Instead, he urged, “Enough. Guys, focus on the actual issue.”
As per a report by the Mirror, the activist underscored that the primary concern should be to prevent the exploitation of starving mothers and babies as “tools of war.” On the Israel-Hamas conflict, he expressed, “I’m truly not concerned with the narratives from either side at this point. When you target infants and children, when their injuries become untreatable, when mothers can no longer nurse, all bets are off.”
Responding to a question on the fairness of criticizing Israelis, many of whom have protested against their government’s actions, Sir Bob suggested a direct approach: “If Israelis truly wish to protest, they should load their vehicles with food and drive to the border, letting their own military stop them if it comes to that.”
Meanwhile, the UK has been collaborating with Jordan to facilitate aid deliveries into Gaza via airdrops, according to Treasury minister James Murray, who admitted the method has its limitations.
The pressure is mounting on the British Prime Minister to recognize Palestine as a state immediately, following France’s lead under President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement set for September.
Some 221 MPs across various parties have signed a letter urging the government to recognize Palestine at an upcoming UN meeting, with the majority being Labour members.
Murray reiterated on Sunday that while the government is committed to recognizing Palestine, it must be a coordinated effort with international partners to truly catalyze change, acknowledging that “140 countries have already recognized Palestine, yet the suffering continues.”
Conversely, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch admitted that images of starving children in Gaza haven’t swayed her support for Israel, citing the complex nature of war and Israel’s defensive stance against various threats. “The ongoing duration of this conflict is complicating life for people both in Palestinian territories and in Israel. It’s imperative that we find a resolution soon,” she stated.
