Billy Joel Reassures Fans About His Health Status

Billy Joel recently addressed his fans’ concerns regarding his health following his diagnosis with a medical condition. Despite the worries, the 76-year-old artist, famously known as the “Piano Man,” assured everyone that he is managing well.

Joel was diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a medical condition characterized by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. This can impact a variety of functions, including hearing, vision, and balance. Despite these challenges, Joel maintains a positive outlook.

“I understand that many are concerned about my well-being, however, I want to assure everyone that I’m fine,” he shared with PEOPLE in a recent interview. “NPH is not widely understood, and I myself am still learning about it. Nevertheless, I am committed to managing the symptoms and recovering as best as I can,” he added.

Joel noted that maintaining balance while walking has been the most significant difficulty he’s faced, which was also the first sign that led him to believe something was amiss.

“It constantly felt as though I was on a ship,” he described his experience.

Billy Joel’s Openness Amidst Public Interest

The timing of Joel’s health update coincides with the heightened public interest due to the HBO docuseries Billy Joel: And So It Goes, which is currently being broadcast. The singer expressed that while the diagnosis was unsettling, there is no immediate cause for alarm.

“The diagnosis was indeed frightening, but I am alright,” he reassured. “I just wanted everyone to know that there’s no need to worry about me being critically ill or something similar,” Joel clarified.

Following his diagnosis in May, Joel made the difficult decision to cancel all his scheduled performances to focus on his health.

The docuseries Billy Joel: And So It Goes will conclude with its final episode airing this Friday on HBO at 8 PM EST, where fans can get more insights into the life and career of the legendary musician.
