Clarifying the Myth of the “Blood Vial” Necklaces: Billy Bob Thornton Speaks Out
Billy Bob Thornton has recently addressed the infamous story about the “blood vial” necklaces that he and Angelina Jolie wore while they were together.
In a candid discussion with Rolling Stone, the 70-year-old actor from Landman clarified that the reality of these necklaces was far less sensational than portrayed by the media.
“It was just a tiny locket with a single drop of blood inside,” Thornton detailed in the interview published Wednesday. “It was supposed to be a sweet, romantic gesture, nothing more. But suddenly, the narrative escalated to us being portrayed as blood-drinking vampires living in a dungeon,” he lamented.
The duo first crossed paths on the set of Pushing Tin in 1999, sparking a fast-paced romance. They married swiftly in 2000, soon after Thornton broke off his engagement with Laura Dern. They adopted their son Maddox in 2002. However, by 2003, Thornton and Jolie decided to part ways. Since 2014, Thornton has been married to Connie Angland.
Despite the rapid progress and eventual dissolution of their relationship, Thornton noted that he and the Maleficent actress have maintained a strong friendship.
“Angelina and I shared wonderful moments together. It remains one of the most significant periods in my life,” he shared with the magazine. “We handled our separation maturely, mainly because our lifestyles were just too different,” he added.
This isn’t the first time Thornton has attempted to set the record straight about the exaggerated tales of the blood vial necklaces. He previously discussed the topic in 2014, explaining the simplicity behind the gesture. “Angie had bought this kit,” he recounted. “Imagine those clear lockets where you place your grandmother’s photo and wear it around your neck. That was the idea.”
“She suggested we make it special by cutting our fingers slightly with a razor blade, smearing a bit of blood on the lockets, and wearing them, akin to how some people wear lockets with their children’s baby hair,” he continued. “From there, rumors escalated to us supposedly wearing jars of blood. It was never like that.”
