11-Year-Old Scots Schoolboy Tragically Dies on New Year’s Day: Mother’s Heartbreaking Tribute

By Benjamin Harrison

On the first day of the new year, Mason Neal, an 11-year-old from Staxigoe, near Wick in Caithness, passed away unexpectedly.

A young Scots boy tragically lost his life on New Year’s Day.

Mason Neal, an 11-year-old from the small village of Staxigoe near Wick, Caithness, was urgently taken to Caithness General Hospital after he felt unwell on the morning of January 1. He unfortunately passed away later that same day.

Lucy, his devastated mother, confirmed the sudden and heartbreaking news of her son’s demise through a social media post. She described Mason as her “loving, caring, bright, cheeky” and “handsome little man.”

Her post read: “The reality of this tragedy has not yet hit us. Words like devastated, heartbroken, and utterly destroyed don’t even begin to describe what we are feeling. On January 1, 2026, we had to say our final goodbye to our beloved Mason as he closed his eyes forever.

“It’s surreal to be writing this, but as the condolences continue to pour in and those who knew and loved him have been notified, I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for everyone’s support during this unimaginable time. I appreciate all the messages and I will try to respond as soon as possible, but for now, we are trying to process our immense loss.

“For now, please hold your loved ones a little tighter and a little longer, in memory of my loving, caring, bright, cheeky, handsome little man, Mason. The 4,322 days we spent together will never be enough – we want you back, Mason! Love you more. Forever 11.”

The local community has come together to support Mason’s family during this difficult time. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Lucy, raising over £11,000 in donations.

The fundraiser’s statement reads: “A few of us from the Staxigoe community want to support a local family in mourning. Mason Neal, aged 11, died suddenly on New Year’s Day. His mother, Lucy, and older sister, Phoebe, are devastated and need our help to navigate this tragic journey.”

Police have stated that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mason’s death. A formal report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

A police statement clarified: “Around 11.10am on Thursday, 1 January 2026, we received a report of a young boy feeling unwell in Staxigoe, outside Wick. He was transported by ambulance to Caithness General Hospital where he later died. His family has been informed.

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
