On Monday (January 19), the UK Prime Minister will speak from Downing Street following the US President’s announcement of potential increased tariffs on European countries that do not support his attempts to purchase Greenland
This morning, Sir Keir Starmer is scheduled to deliver a speech in response to Donald Trump’s recent tariff threats.
Today, from Downing Street, the Prime Minister will address the nation, following the US President’s intention to impose heightened tariffs on European nations that object to his plans to acquire Greenland.
The Prime Minister has communicated to the American President that imposing tariffs on the UK and other European allies would be inappropriate.
A governmental source stated that Starmer will outline the UK’s strategy for collaboration with international allies and emphasize the nation’s commitment to its principles.
Furthermore, he is expected to discuss his commitment to safeguard the security, living standards, and opportunities of British citizens, both domestically and internationally.
Following the US president’s declaration that starting February 1, a 10% tariff will be applied to all goods from Britain, escalating to 25% by June 1.
These tariffs are to remain until an agreement is made for the US to buy Greenland from Denmark.
Trump has stated that the same tariff conditions will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland.
Over the course of Sunday afternoon, Starmer engaged in multiple phone discussions, including with Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, reasserting his stance that the future of Greenland should be determined solely by Denmark and Greenland and emphasizing the importance of High North security for all NATO members in protecting Euro-Atlantic interests.
“Imposing tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of NATO allies is incorrect,” stated a spokesperson from Downing Street.
Earlier on Monday, Trump claimed that Denmark had consistently ignored warnings about the need to shield Greenland from Russian threats.
On his Truth Social platform, he wrote: “NATO has been advising Denmark for 20 years that ‘you have to keep the Russian threat away from Greenland’. Sadly, Denmark has been unable to act. Now is the time, and it will happen! ! !”.
Trump also criticized a Danish-led military exercise in Greenland this week, questioning the motives behind the countries’ trip to Greenland.
