The rock music community is in mourning following the loss of a renowned 1970s rock musician.

Bob Starkie, also known as Bongo, passed away on Saturday, as confirmed by both his relatives and his band members from Skyhooks. Leukemia was reported as the cause of his death.

Starkie was a prominent member of Skyhooks during their peak, playing on their most successful albums like 1974’s Living in the 70’s and 1975’s Ego Is Not a Dirty Word. His guitar skills are showcased in hit singles such as “Horror Movie,” “You Just Like Me Cos I’m Good in Bed,” and “All My Friends Are Getting Married,” as well as the title track from the 1974 album “Living in the 70’s.” He, along with the rest of Skyhooks, was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame in 1992.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that early this morning, Bob ‘Bongo’ Starkie has left us,” said a statement from the band. “Over the past year, he valiantly battled leukemia with the hope of returning to the stage for more performances. Music remained a passion for him until the end. Bob was not only the youngest member of the iconic Skyhooks but also fully embraced the theatrical aspect of rock, from dramatic face makeup to unique stage costumes. His true happiness was found in touring and performing live.”

The band concluded their tribute by expressing, “Skyhooks are profoundly saddened by the departure of our bandmate and extend our deepest sympathies to Bob’s family.”

Additionally, a heartfelt statement from Starkie’s daughter Indiana was included by Skyhooks. She shared that her father was embraced by loved ones and was listening to rock ‘n’ roll music during his final moments.

“Our beloved Grand-Daddy-Bop peacefully passed away listening to Chuck Berry, cuddling with his pet Bonnie, and surrounded by friends and family,” she wrote. “His daughters Indiana and Arabella, grandchildren Phoenix and Lucia, partner Chrissy, close friend Ian, and sons-in-law Simon and Chris will deeply miss him. We are grateful for all the support and love he received until his final moments.”
