Mike Rowe is launching a heartwarming new series that highlights the remarkable individuals who could be living right next door.
The former Dirty Jobs star, aged 63, shared insights with PopCulture.com about his upcoming series, People You Should Know, which debuts on May 2 on his YouTube channel. He described the series as a beacon of hope during times when many feel overwhelmed and helpless.
The idea for People You Should Know originated over five years ago with Rowe’s series on Facebook Watch titled Returning the Favor. “I haven’t seen such viewer-driven content since Dirty Jobs,” he remarked to PopCulture. “The premise revolves around those in your community who go the extra mile. They’re the ones who volunteer for the tough tasks and often dedicate their lives to enhancing their community. They’re the local heroes everyone admires.”
During its run, Returning the Favor produced over 100 episodes, earned Rowe a Daytime Emmy, and built a loyal online following. However, when Facebook Watch discontinued, Rowe faced a large audience clamoring for more. “We had two million followers wondering about their beloved show. People You Should Know is essentially its continuation,” he explained.
“The series maintains its core essence because, fundamentally, our world hasn’t changed,” he added. “There’s a sense that people are searching for the kind of neighbors everyone desires to have.”
Rowe and his compact team have creatively financed the entire project, focusing on ‘micro’ approaches to ‘macro’ issues. One episode, for instance, features a man who teaches blacksmithing to veterans and first responders dealing with PTSD.
“The outcomes are truly remarkable,” Rowe observed. “We’re addressing large-scale societal issues with simple, grassroots solutions that are effective locally but have the potential to be expanded.”
He emphasized, “It’s inspiring to see that individual actions can significantly impact a community, just by emulating a neighbor’s initiative.” Despite his earnest tone, Rowe assured that the series is not only meaningful but also filled with entertaining behind-the-scenes antics.
“The series blends reality with purpose. It’s about fostering hope and implementing grassroots solutions in times of despair,” he clarified. “Governments have their role, but real change often starts from the ground up. It’s crucial to spotlight those making a difference independently of governmental influence.”
People You Should Know makes its debut on Mike Rowe’s YouTube channel on Friday, May 2.
