Despite this, it’s becoming a popular tool among college students for essay writing. Moreover, this new wave of technology has sparked concern among professionals in knowledge-intensive jobs, with many wondering if AI could replace them.

Although AI could bring significant transformations to the job market, there’s no need to worry immediately. Instead, it’s a good idea to stay calm and use the present time to prepare and adapt.

To gauge how rapidly AI could reshape the overall job market, I spoke with Isabella Loaiza-Saa from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Her research suggests that while AI will influence the job market, its profound impacts might not be felt for several more years. Historically, it has taken decades for technological advancements to significantly alter the job market, though AI could accelerate this timeline.

It’s critical to understand that despite the buzz, AI is still a nascent technology. Its practical applications within the workforce have not yet fully materialized.

“There’s a disparity between what the technology could achieve and its current real-world implementation and acceptance,” Loaiza-Saa points out. “We’re just beginning to witness how AI is being embraced by workers and companies, and this process will involve trial and error. Not every technology is utilized as originally planned, and full adoption can take time once it is deployed.”

While it’s undeniable that many have lost jobs or even careers, Loaiza-Saa warns against solely attributing these job market contractions to AI. There may be a coincidence in timing, but it doesn’t necessarily mean AI is the cause.

“We should not mistake the effects of AI for broader economic trends,” Loaiza-Saa advises. “Economic slowdowns often lead to strict job markets, but these should not be exclusively blamed on AI.”

Still Anxious About AI?

Feeling anxious is natural, especially when the timeframe to adapt seems short. However, channeling this anxiety into proactive measures is crucial. Staying flexible is key whenever new technologies emerge.

“Mastering AI is essential,” asserts Loaiza-Saa. “You don’t necessarily need to become a programmer, but understanding how to collaborate with AI is crucial. Additionally, enhancing your critical thinking skills and ability to work cooperatively with others, whether they are humans or AI, is beneficial.”

The specifics of what skills to enhance can be vague, as is often the case with emerging technologies.

“In the medium to long term, AI is likely to create new job categories,” Loaiza-Saa explains. “Just as telephones led to call centers and the internet to social media managers, AI has already started to spawn careers in AI engineering.

“While it’s simpler to envision automation affecting current jobs and tasks, it’s harder to predict the new types of jobs that emerging technologies will create.”

Skill Enhancement in the AI Era

A recent study co-authored by Loaiza-Saa identifies fields likely to be less affected by AI or that could integrate seamlessly with AI-driven changes. These roles often involve significant human interaction and are categorized under a framework called EPOCH, which has seen growth from 2016 to 2024, particularly in white-collar jobs.

EPOCH encompasses jobs that require:

“We believe that jobs with high EPOCH capabilities will be more resilient to AI,” Loaiza-Saa comments. “For instance, industries like home care show this resilience. Similarly, roles such as dentists, chiropractors, nannies, public relations specialists, and sales positions are likely to endure.”

Your Career is Likely to Adapt, Not Disappear

The uncertainties of AI adoption are indeed concerning, but Loaiza-Saa offers some reassurance.

“Technological advancements typically don’t eliminate jobs outright; they tend to automate specific tasks within a job. Most often, they transform jobs rather than replace them entirely. While some jobs may be lost—a trend not exclusive to AI—most will evolve and adapt.”
