New Information on the Passing of Renowned British Actor Timothy West
Recently released details shed light on the events leading up to the death of celebrated British actor Timothy West.
Timothy West, a beloved figure in British entertainment, who was known for his roles in iconic U.K. soap operas such as Coronation Street and EastEnders, died following a prolonged illness. He passed away in a hospice care facility on November 12, 2024, after enduring a severe traumatic brain injury caused by a fall months earlier.
An inquest held at Westminster Coroner’s Court, reported by sources including the BBC and the Independent, revealed significant details about West’s accident. The assistant coroner, Ellie Oakley, stated that West suffered the injury from a fall close to his residence on August 11, 2024. The specifics of the incident remain unclear, with no indication of anyone else being involved.
After spending three months in the hospital, West was moved to the Wandsworth Common Care Home on November 5, where he received end-of-life care until his death a week later at the age of 90.
Ellie Oakley commented on the situation, noting, “Unfortunately, he was not well enough to be discharged to his home despite receiving appropriate care in the care home. He died on November 12, 2024.”
Thomas Holden, the general manager at Wandsworth Common Care Home, expressed that the intention was to rehabilitate West sufficiently for him to return home, fulfilling his wish to spend his final days there. Unfortunately, West’s health gradually worsened. Holden added that West’s family was present throughout his last day, staying by his side until he passed away peacefully at 7:20 p.m.
The inquest concluded that West’s medical cause of death was a subdural hematoma and extra-axial hemorrhage, compounded by a traumatic brain injury and non-convulsive status epilepticus, aspiration pneumonia, and hypertension.
West’s children, Juliet, Samuel, and Joseph, formally announced their father’s death, stating, “After a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage, our darling father Timothy West died peacefully in his sleep yesterday evening. He was 90 years old. Tim was with friends and family at the end.”
They further mentioned, “He leaves behind his wife, Prunella Scales, to whom he was married for 61 years, a sister, a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. All of us will miss him terribly.”
Timothy West is fondly remembered not only for his soap opera characters Eric Babbage and Stan Carter but also for his roles in television comedies like Brass and Not Going Out, as well as dramas such as Bleak House and Gentleman Jack. He also portrayed Winston Churchill in three different productions: Churchill and the Generals (1979), The Last Bastion (1984), and Hiroshima (1995).
