Rubby Pérez, a celebrated Dominican merengue artist, has passed away at the age of 69.
Pérez was tragically killed along with 118 others when the roof of a nightclub collapsed in the Dominican Republic. He was performing at the venue when the incident occurred.
According to NBC News, Juan Manuel Méndez, the country’s Emergency Operations Director, announced last Tuesday that Pérez’s remains were recovered from the wreckage. Enrique Paulino, Pérez’s manager, also confirmed the singer’s demise.
Among the victims of the tragic event were Pérez, two ex-Major League Baseball players, and a regional governor. The catastrophe unfolded at the Jet Set nightclub located in Santo Domingo.
By the end of the previous week, rescue operations were ongoing as teams sifted through the debris, hoping to find more victims and any possible survivors.
Méndez reported that approximately 155 individuals were transported to nearby hospitals. He emphasized that the emergency response teams would continue their search efforts until all missing persons are accounted for by their families.
Rescue teams are concentrating on three specific sections of the nightclub where noises have been detected under the debris, indicating possible signs of survivors.
Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi, managed to call the nation’s president from beneath the rubble. Her demise was later confirmed by her brother, former MLB star Nelson Cruz, through an Instagram post last week.
In a heartfelt message, Nelson Cruz conveyed the family’s deep sorrow: “With profound pain, the Cruz Martínez family announces the passing of our beloved sister, mother, daughter, aunt, and friend: Nelsy M. Cruz Martínez. She dedicated her life with commitment and love towards her people and community,” read the translation of his post.
Also among those who perished in the collapse were former MLB athletes Tony Blanco and Octavio Dotel.
The investigation into the cause of the roof’s collapse is ongoing. The nightclub’s owners have expressed on Instagram their full cooperation with the authorities to determine the reasons behind the disaster.
