The bus was transporting 60 to 70 students and staff members from Minehead Middle School as they were returning from a recent visit to Exmoor Zoo, just before the school term concluded.
A 10-year-old boy, Oliver Price, tragically lost his life in a bus accident while on his way back from a school trip to the zoo, authorities have confirmed.
Oliver was fatally injured when the bus veered off the A396 at Cutcombe Hill near Minehead, Somerset, toppling down a 20-foot slope last Thursday, as reported by Avon and Somerset Police.
The bus was filled with approximately 60 to 70 students and personnel from Minehead Middle School, who had just visited Exmoor Zoo shortly before the school’s term ended.
Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington expressed his condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are primarily with Oliver’s family during this excruciatingly painful period. We will keep them informed as we proceed.”
“We have launched a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash. This process may take some time, and we appreciate everyone’s patience while we conduct our inquiries,” he added.
“In the past few days, we have been in close contact with other agencies and the school to ensure that support is available for all affected,” he continued.
“We are profoundly thankful for the community’s overwhelming support. It truly demonstrates the strong bonds within this community,” he remarked.
“Additionally, I want to extend my gratitude to all the emergency responders and volunteer groups who helped at the scene, as well as the hospital staff who are assisting the injured,” he concluded.
Several children were released from the hospital over the weekend, however, two children and three adults are still receiving medical treatment, per police reports.
As of the latest updates, the conditions of those still in the hospital are stable. The accident occurred between Wheddon Cross and Timberscombe around 3:15 pm on July 17.
The bus left the roadway, overturned, and landed about 20 feet from the street, down a steep embankment. Fortunately, an off-duty firefighter following the bus was able to begin extracting passengers immediately.
Avon and Somerset Police’s serious collision investigation unit is actively examining the details of the incident. The coach has been retrieved and is undergoing a comprehensive technical analysis by experts.
“We are also gathering statements from adults who were either on the bus or nearby at the time to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the crash,” said a spokesperson for the police force.
“Although the initial examination of the site is complete, the road will remain closed while Somerset Council conducts a thorough safety inspection,” the spokesperson added.
Following the tragic event, community members and students from the school, which caters to children aged 9 to 14, gathered at the school gates to offer tributes and support each other. Many were visibly distressed, sharing hugs and comfort. Online fundraising initiatives for those impacted have collected over £25,000.
