Prime Minister Faces Significant Backlash for Approving Peter Mandelson as US Ambassador Last Year
Stephen Flynn has voiced a strong demand for Keir Starmer’s resignation, labeling him a “lame duck leader” in light of the controversy surrounding Peter Mandelson.
The leader of the SNP in Westminster has argued that it is detrimental for everyone involved for Starmer to remain in office, especially after the recent resignation of the Chief of Staff at Downing Street.
The Prime Minister is currently facing severe criticism for his decision last year to appoint Peter Mandelson as the US ambassador.
The controversy escalated when Morgan McSweeney, the chief aide, resigned, accepting “full responsibility” for advising the Prime Minister on Mandelson’s appointment—an appointment from which Mandelson was dismissed last year.
Last week, Peter Mandelson, who also stepped down from the House of Lords, became the subject of a police investigation following accusations that he shared governmental information with his friend, the convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, during the financial crisis. This investigation was initiated after the US Department of Justice released details from the so-called Epstein files.
Flynn criticized the Labour Government for being deeply embroiled in chaos, diverting its attention from pressing issues such as the rising cost of living under Keir Starmer’s leadership.

Flynn points out that under Starmer’s leadership, the Labour Party has stumbled from one crisis to another without fulfilling the promises of change it had made to voters. He argues that the ongoing turmoil is neither in Scotland’s interest nor in anyone else’s.
He emphasized that Starmer’s diminishing support among voters and calls from his own party members for his resignation signify his failure as a leader capable of enacting change.
“This never-ending chaos can’t continue. Keir Starmer should do the honorable thing and resign,” Flynn added.
While McSweeney had suggested the appointment of Lord Mandelson, Flynn pointed out that it was ultimately Starmer who made the final decision, despite public knowledge of Mandelson’s controversial ties with Epstein.
“That decision is indefensible and rests solely with Keir Starmer,” Flynn stated.
The Prime Minister has publicly denounced his former ambassador, accusing him of misleading about the extent of his relationship with the sex offender.
Amid these controversies, the Scottish Greens have challenged Scottish Labour to oppose Sir Keir’s leadership decisively.
Gillian Mackay, co-leader of the Scottish Greens, expressed that Scottish Labour cannot remain indifferent to the scandal and disgrace that has engulfed Downing Street.
“With the upcoming elections in Scotland, people will remember a party that failed to hold its own leaders accountable,” Mackay stated, urging every Labour MP and MSP to vocalize their stance and demand integrity and transparency from their leadership.
Flynn also criticized Anas Sarwar for his lack of leadership in addressing the Mandelson scandal, describing him as a leader who avoids the media, shirks responsibility, and avoids scrutiny whenever Labour faces a scandal.
“Sarwar wants to be seen as a potential First Minister but his actions during crises show he does not possess the fortitude required to stand up for Scotland. It’s time for him to step forward, demonstrate some backbone, and demand Starmer’s resignation,” Flynn concluded.
Both the UK Government and Scottish Labour have been approached for comments on the issue.
