EXCLUSIVE – A parliamentarian harshly criticized Douglas Alexander’s new role as Scottish Secretary, joking, “If I had a pound for everyone who liked Douglas, I would have 50p.”
Internal discord has surfaced within Labour following allegations that Ian Murray was dismissed from the Cabinet due to insufficient visits to Scotland.
A fellow party MP vehemently denied the claims about the former Scottish Secretary, labeling them as “completely and utterly false.”
This MP also harshly spoke out against Murray’s replacement, Douglas Alexander, referring to him dismissively as a “wee p***k” and suggesting he was unpopular.
Murray faced a harsh dismissal by Keir Starmer last Friday during an engagement at a Hearts FC event.
The dismissal led to substantial backlash, resulting in Murray being reinstated in a junior ministerial position within the government.
As reported by the Record, concerns that Murray was not dedicating sufficient time to his political responsibilities in Scotland were the reasons behind his removal from the Cabinet position.
Murray’s absence from a key Labour gathering in Stirling, designated for MPs and MSPs, reportedly upset the team of Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar. This event was cited as a significant factor in his dismissal.
Following the incident, Alexander, who is both an MP for Lothian East and a supporter of Sarwar, was appointed to replace Murray a few weeks later.
A Scottish Labour MP expressed strong disapproval of Alexander, stating, “Douglas is a wee p***k who has been scheming to get this position for over a year.”
The same MP added, “If I had a pound for everyone who liked Douglas, I would have 50p,” indicating a lack of support for Alexander among fellow Labour members.
It was also noted that no congratulations for Alexander’s new role appeared within the Scottish Labour MP WhatsApp group.
Defending Murray, the MP explained that he missed the Stirling gathering because he was in Methil working on job preservation efforts.
This MP also labeled Sarwar’s team as “cowards.”

A Labour source defended Murray’s commitment, stating, “Ian worked tirelessly to help Labour govern effectively, and prioritizing job preservation in Methil was more crucial than attending a party away day.”
Commenting on the situation, SNP MSP for East Lothian, Paul McLennan, criticized the Labour Party for its handling of the situation, describing it as “complete chaos” following Murray’s dismissal. He lamented Labour’s first year in governance as a series of failures, suggesting that Scotland deserves better leadership and governance.
McLennan highlighted the reappointment of a Scottish Secretary who had last served in that role twenty years ago as indicative of the party’s chaotic state and lack of commitment to Scottish interests.
Amidst ongoing internal conflicts within Labour, he praised the SNP for delivering on its promises and providing Scotland with a fresh start towards independence.
Upon his appointment, Alexander paid homage to Murray, acknowledging his past efforts and friendship. He pointed out that reshuffles are a prime minister’s prerogative to structure their team as they see fit.
Alexander remarked, “Most people understand that leaders in any organization periodically make personnel decisions, and I’m pleased that the Prime Minister has placed Ian in roles across two government departments.”
