Police Hunt Fishermen Spotted Before Highland Wildfire Ignites

Investigations continue after a fire near Loch Allan, situated north of Dava in the Strathspey region.

Authorities are currently searching for a group seen fishing near Loch Allan just prior to the outbreak of a significant wildfire in the Highlands.

Police efforts are ongoing in the aftermath of the wildfire around Loch Allan, located north of Dava in Strathspey.

The fire, which was reported to authorities at approximately 4:05 PM on Saturday, June 28, led to the closure of several roads in the vicinity.

Initial investigations indicate that the fire may have originated along the southeastern shoreline of Loch Allan, close to the A939 road. Police are seeking any information related to the incident.

Witnesses reported seeing individuals equipped with deck chairs and fishing gear in the area shortly before the fire erupted. These individuals are now persons of interest in the ongoing investigation.

Detective Inspector Andy Bilton commented on the situation, stating, “Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the wildfire severely damaged a large area of the countryside. We are collaborating with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to fully determine the circumstances surrounding the event.”

“We were informed that people with deck chairs and fishing rods were spotted near Loch Allan when the fire started. We are eager to speak with them as they might possess information that could aid our investigation. We encourage them to come forward and speak with our officers,” he added.

A witness who directed the first responding fire crew to the fire’s apparent point of origin is also being sought for her potentially crucial information. “We would like to speak with a woman who helped the initial fire team by showing them where the fire seemed to have started. Her input could be valuable, and we urge her to contact us,” said Detective Inspector Bilton.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Police Scotland at 101, citing incident number 2281 of Saturday, June 28, 2025, or to provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

Separately, investigations into another wildfire on the Carrbridge moor southwest of Dava, which was first reported on Friday, June 20 and rekindled several times over 11 days before being extinguished, have concluded without finding any criminal elements.
