The South Korean entertainment industry is mourning the loss of actor Song Young-kyu, who has passed away at the age of 55.
He was discovered deceased by a friend in a vehicle that was parked, at approximately 8 a.m. local time. Authorities investigating the scene did not find any evidence of criminal activity involved in his death.
In a recent event this June, Song faced legal consequences for driving under the influence. He was apprehended after driving for five kilometers while his blood alcohol level was over the limit, resulting in an immediate suspension of his driving license as per the laws in South Korea.
This drunk driving charge led to his removal from several acting roles. He was let go from his parts in ENA’s The Defects, where he portrayed a dishonest clergyman, and SBS’s The Winning Try, where he depicted a rugby coach, as well as from a theatrical performance in Shakespeare in Love.
Internationally, Song was renowned for his portrayal of Chief Choi in the 2019 hit movie Extreme Job, as well as for his roles in Netflix’s Narco-Saints and Disney+’s Big Bet.
Within his home country, Song was celebrated as one of the top character actors, admired for his commanding presence and subtle humor. His passing is a significant loss and highlights the ongoing issues within South Korea regarding the aggressive nature of celebrity media coverage and the cultural reluctance to openly discuss mental health.
Song’s legacy is carried on by his wife and two daughters.
