Miley Cyrus recently opened up about the incident involving a penis-shaped cake that led to her dismissal from the animated movie Hotel Transylvania.
The 32-year-old artist, known for her hit “Something Beautiful,” explained that she lost her role as the main character in the popular film series and was replaced by Selena Gomez following her decision to pose with a phallic cake during a birthday celebration for her then-boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth.
“I jokingly bought a penis cake for my boyfriend’s birthday, and it cost me my job,” Cyrus shared with Monica Lewinsky on the Tuesday episode of Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast. “I was the lead actress in Hotel Transylvania, but they fired and replaced me for making an inappropriate, adult-themed joke.”
At the time of the scandal, Cyrus had just turned 18 and was transitioning from a Disney Channel star to an artist with a more mature image. “I was 18—so technically, I was old enough to work on a children’s movie,” she remarked, “but I’m not a child myself.”
The controversy surrounding the penis cake surprised Cyrus, particularly because the photo was leaked from her stolen camera and the joke itself seemed relatively harmless to her.
“The absurd part about getting fired over a penis cake is that these cakes are a common sight at bachelorette parties,” explained the “Easy Lover” singer. “In places like Nashville, Tennessee, getting a penis cake is no big deal. I thought it was a simple, harmless joke. You see these themes at bachelorette parties all the time with themed necklaces, cups, and straws.”
Reflecting on the situation more than ten years later, Cyrus believes that her past as a Disney Channel star might have prevented her from experiencing certain aspects of early adulthood. “Being fired for something that’s quite normal for girls my age—they attend bachelorette parties, they go to Magic Mike shows,” she said. “But at that time, I wasn’t considered suitable for children’s content, even though it was part of my personal life.”
Considering whether such an incident would occur in today’s environment, Cyrus speculated, “I’m not sure if we still hold our Disney stars and teen idols in the same regard as before. However, I believe that actions of a movie’s leading actor or actress that don’t match the intended audience can still have repercussions.”
