Tom Ellis Discusses Recent Roles and the One That Got Away
Tom Ellis, recognized for his captivating performances in television series such as Lucifer, Merlin, The Strain, and Doctor Who, recently shared insights into his brush with a major film role. While Ellis has made a name for himself in television, he was on the verge of a significant leap to cinematic prominence.
In a detailed discussion with Square Mile, the 40-year-old actor from Wales opened up about his latest projects and future endeavors. He highlighted his leading role in the 2025 crime-comedy, The Thursday Murder Club, and his forthcoming participation in the CBS crime series CIA, an extension of the network’s successful FBI series. However, it was his near-miss with a blockbuster film role that stood out during the interview.
Ellis revealed that he was a finalist for the role of Reed Richards in the Marvel movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps. “There was a small, select group invited to audition for Reed Richards,” Ellis recounted. “I had been looking for the right opportunity, both in terms of timing and character. When I saw Richards’ picture in the comic books, I thought, ‘this could be it.’ We even looked quite alike.”
After submitting his audition tape, Ellis anxiously awaited a response, only to learn that the role had been awarded to Pedro Pascal.
“To be honest, he’s not in many things,” Ellis joked, acknowledging Pascal’s talent. “He’s fantastic, though. I’m eager to see how it turns out. The trailer itself looked pretty exciting.”
Ellis continued with a light-hearted tone, reflecting on a piece of advice he once received: the best part of being an actor is landing a role, rather than the actual acting part. “I get that to some extent,” he admitted. “Though I genuinely enjoy the acting itself. But what really drives us is the ‘what if’ – the possibilities. We’re all in this industry because we once dreamed of being here. I believe we’re all still dreamers at heart, and those who deny that are either too cynical or perhaps they shouldn’t be in the industry anymore.”
The Fantastic Four: First Steps was a commercial success, grossing $521.9 million following its release in July. The film is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
