Jennifer Aniston Takes on a Complex Role in New TV Show
Jennifer Aniston is set to portray the mother of Jenette McCurdy in the television adaptation of McCurdy’s controversial memoir, I’m Glad My Mom’s Dead. Despite the challenges presented by the role, given the troubled relationship between McCurdy and her mother as depicted in the memoir, Aniston feels a personal connection to the character. She recently shared insights into her preparation for the role.
“We share a lot of similarities,” Aniston revealed in an interview with PEOPLE, referring to the parallels between their maternal relationships. “Our mothers were very alike.”
Aniston expressed enthusiasm about the project after it was proposed to her. “The moment it was presented to me, I was immediately captivated and honored to work alongside Jennette and talents like Sharon Horgan and LuckyChap,” she said. Aniston also complimented the memoir for its exquisite writing and praised McCurdy’s unique qualities. “It’s thrilling to think about starting the production,” she added.
Discussing her admiration for McCurdy, Aniston highlighted, “Considering everything she’s gone through, Jennette’s resilience and who she has become is truly extraordinary.” This observation came during Aniston’s promotional work with Pvolve for their Longevity Bundle.
In her memoir, McCurdy wrote about the severe impact her mother, Debra, who passed away in 2013, had on her life. She accused her mother of pushing her into acting and subjected her to various forms of abuse, including contributing to her development of an eating disorder and allowing her to be exploited in the entertainment industry.
Aniston also opened up about her own difficult relationship with her mother, Nancy Dow, who died in 2016. In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph back in 2018, she described her mother as being preoccupied with appearances due to her background in modeling. “I wasn’t the perfect child she had hoped for,” Aniston reflected.
Further elaborating on her family dynamics in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Aniston described her upbringing as unstable and unsafe, largely due to her mother’s critical nature. “Being a stunning model, my mother had high expectations that I felt I could never meet. I’ve never seen myself as she saw me, and I’ve come to terms with that,” Aniston shared.
This deep personal connection to her own maternal experiences helps Aniston relate profoundly to her upcoming role, adding a layer of authenticity and emotion to her performance as she steps into the shoes of McCurdy’s mother onscreen.
