A Historic Podcast Nears Its Conclusion

The podcasting world is about to bid farewell to one of its pioneers, as Marc Maron’s influential show WTF prepares to wind down this coming fall. Since its inception in 2009, the podcast has amassed nearly 2,000 episodes, capturing the attention of listeners worldwide.

Known for its candid interview format, WTF with Marc Maron has played a significant role in shaping the podcasting landscape and has achieved over one billion downloads internationally. Its success helped pave the way for many similar podcasts that followed.

“After sixteen years, we’ve achieved more than we ever imagined, and now it’s time to close this chapter. We’re choosing to end WTF on our terms this fall,” Maron revealed in the latest episode.

Throughout its run, Maron has welcomed a diverse array of guests, including top-tier celebrities, musical icons, and even a sitting president. His 2015 session with President Barack Obama remains one of the most celebrated and heavily downloaded episodes in the podcasting world.

“The truth is, after producing new content every Monday and Thursday for nearly sixteen years, we’re exhausted. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, but we’re ready to move on. This isn’t the end of my career in creating and hosting shows, but it’s time to conclude this particular project and explore new beginnings,” Maron expressed in today’s broadcast.

Maron isn’t slowing down, however. He’s involved in several upcoming projects, including a new HBO stand-up special and a significant role in Rob Burnett’s film In Memoriam, featuring Sharon Stone and Regina Hall. Additionally, he’s set to appear in a Bruce Springsteen biopic titled Deliver Me From Nowhere, portraying Chuck Plotkin, Springsteen’s producer.

“Ending the show on our own terms is a privilege that we’re grateful for. From the beginning, we’ve steered this ship, and we choose to dock it now, while we’re still passionate about what we’ve created. It’s been a transformative journey for both me and my co-creator Brendan. We’ve accomplished things we never dreamed of because of this show. My life has been profoundly changed by it. This decision comes from a place of complete fulfillment and readiness for what’s next,” Maron said, reflecting on the journey.
