Renowned Grammy-winning guitarist Steve Cropper has passed away at the age of 84.
Last Wednesday, his son Cameron revealed to Variety that his father had died. Although a specific cause of death was not disclosed, it was noted that Cropper had been recuperating from a recent fall at a rehabilitation facility in Nashville, Tennessee just days prior to his passing.
During the 1960s, Cropper became one of the most celebrated guitarists, mainly through his collaborations with the group Booker T & the M.G’s. Together, they produced iconic tracks and worked with numerous prominent artists.
Throughout his illustrious career, Cropper contributed his guitar skills to a slew of hits that remain popular to this day, such as Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” and Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man.”
He also provided guitar accompaniments for a variety of famous musicians including Neil Young, Rod Stewart, Ringo Starr, John Prine, and Johnnie Taylor.
Cropper received Grammy recognition for his performance in “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” and for his musical contributions to Booker T’s track “Cruisin.”
In 1992, his contributions to music were further acknowledged with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Cropper also gained recognition for his role in the Blues Brothers band, which included performances in the hit movies The Blues Brothers and Blues Brothers 2000 alongside Dan Aykroyd.
Additionally, he featured in “Weird Al” Yankovic’s mockumentary The Compleat Al, humorously auditioning to be part of Yankovic’s fictional band by playing “Soul Man.”
One of his more recent achievements includes a Grammy nomination in 2021 for Best Contemporary Blues Album for his album Fire It Up.
Steve Cropper is survived by his wife, Angel, and their four children.
