Anthony Burke struck Gloria Graham in the heart of Glasgow, an event witnessed by emergency services already responding to a nearby crash.
In a tragic turn of events, a driver fatally struck a woman mere meters from another deadly accident.
On February 2, 2023, in Glasgow’s Elmbank Street, 60-year-old Anthony Burke hit 64-year-old Gloria Graham, a mother of two. Graham was crossing the street at a junction when Burke turned his Volkswagen Tiguan into her path.
The collision was seen by emergency personnel who were already on site dealing with another accident.
Graham was rushed to the hospital after the incident but succumbed to her injuries nearly a month later on March 1, 2023.
Today, Burke admitted his guilt in Glasgow Sheriff Court, acknowledging his role in causing Graham’s death through careless driving.
The court was presented with CCTV footage showing numerous emergency vehicles with flashing lights at the scene.
It is believed Graham was heading home to nearby Argyle Street when she briefly spoke with a police officer.
The video captured Graham crossing the road and nearly reaching the pavement before Burke turned into Elmbank Street, striking her. Prosecutor Kathleen O’Donnell explained, “He braked to slow the vehicle through the turn but did not stop. Miss Graham was hit by the car and came to rest on the road; then the vehicle stopped.”
Police officers, an off-duty GP, and a paramedic from the other accident scene quickly came to assist Graham. She suffered a bleeding head injury, rib and pelvic fractures, and a lung wound.
Her death was ultimately attributed to “bronchopneumonia due to traumatic brain injury due to a road traffic collision.”
An investigation into the collision concluded that Burke had “sufficient time” to see Graham on the road and stop. Although Burke, from Giffnock, East Renfrewshire, was driving at a speed of 10 to 15 miles per hour, speed was determined not to be a contributing factor in the accident.
Sheriff Louise Arrol KC deferred sentencing pending background reports until the following month, disqualifying Burke from driving and granting him bail in the meantime. Another fatal incident nearby involved Akbar Razaq, who hit pedestrian Chinenye Okonkwo while driving at 60mph in a 30mph zone. Ms. Okonkwo, a 33-year-old from Nigeria, was declared dead at the scene.
Lord Mulholland addressed the High Court in Glasgow, describing her death as an “utter tragedy.” Razaq, 29, remains in custody after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, with sentencing scheduled for May.
