Renowned baritone opera singer Jubilant Sykes has passed away at the age of 71.
A statement issued by the Santa Monica Police Department disclosed that on December 8, police were dispatched to Sykes’ residence following reports of an ongoing assault.
The police report detailed, “Upon entering the home, officers found 71-year-old Jubilant Sykes suffering from severe injuries indicative of a stabbing. Emergency services from the Santa Monica Fire Department were called to the scene, where they declared the victim deceased.”
Authorities detained 31-year-old Micah Sykes, the son of the singer, in connection with the stabbing. He was arrested smoothly and has been charged with murder. Currently, he is being held in a jail in Southern California without the possibility of bail. “The matter will soon be forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to consider charges,” the police added.
Jubilant Sykes was celebrated globally for his exceptional voice and performances in prestigious venues including the Barbican Center in London, the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, and Carnegie Hall.
His remarkable rendition of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass earned him a nomination for Best Classical Album at the Grammy Awards in 2009.
Throughout his illustrious career, Sykes collaborated with numerous illustrious artists and musicians such as Josh Groban, Julie Andrews, Carlos Santana, Brian Wilson, Terence Blanchard, John Beasley, Patrice Rushen, among others.
Late in his career, Sykes also ventured into acting, including a performance in the 2014 historical movie Freedom alongside Cuba Gooding Jr., and a part in the 2023 thriller The Descent.
