Grace VanderWaal is grieving the recent demise of her mother, who succumbed to cancer after a 17-month struggle.
The 21-year-old victor of America’s Got Talent, Grace VanderWaal, shared the news of her mother, Tina VanderWaal’s passing at the age of 53 on Instagram on October 21, stating she is “at a loss for words” to describe her sorrow.
“I love you, mommy. So much. Every morning I wake up wanting to call you. I’m not sure how to proceed without you,” she added. “I love you.”
The post included moments captured with her mother over the years, as well as a touching screenshot of a text message from Tina asking her daughter, “Whatcha doin today? Miss you so much.”
Grace’s father, Dave VanderWaal, also expressed his grief on Facebook, disclosing that his wife passed away on October 20, following over a year of battling cancer.
“She fought bravely until the end of her lengthy, 17-month fight with cancer, always managing to remain optimistic not just for herself but also for others dealing with the same harsh reality,” he reflected on his wife of 27 years, who was not only a silversmith but also a glass artist. “Tina was undoubtedly our family’s core, infusing our lives with creativity, laughter, and love. Her talents ranged from crafting exquisite jewelry, inspiring creativity in others, to making each family holiday and occasion memorable. She infused joy and light into everything she touched.”
Earlier this year, Tina disclosed on a fundraising page that she had been diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in June 2024. She leaves behind her husband, daughter Grace, another daughter Olivia, age 25, and son Jakob, age 26.
Following Grace’s heartfelt tribute, expressions of condolence and love flooded in, with one user recalling, “Oh my god. I remember her so vividly from the first time I saw you on AGT, she was so proud of you. I’m so sorry for your loss. She will always be proud of you Grace, she’s always going to be looking after you from somewhere. Sending you big hugs. Love you.”
“Grace, I admire all the traits your mom instilled in you: courage, kindness, inspiration, empathy, humility, and so much more,” another shared. “I’ll always remember her through you.”
“Oh God Grace, I love you and your family so much,” another commenter added. “Tina was such a bright light. This is just unimaginable. Sending you all so much love.”
