Famous Star Reveals Her Gradual Exit From Hollywood Spotlight

Jamie Lee Curtis has recently shared her thoughts on stepping back from the limelight, criticizing the film industry’s approach to aging.

Speaking with The Guardian as Disney’s Freakier Friday is set to release on August 8, the 66-year-old Oscar-winning actress discussed how she was influenced by the experiences of her parents, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. Both faced neglect by the industry as they aged, which deeply impacted Curtis’s perspective on her own career.

“Seeing my parents gradually lose everything that brought them their fame and livelihood because the industry turned its back on them as they got older was heartbreaking,” Curtis shared with the publication. “They climbed to great heights and then watched everything they had worked for dwindle away, which was incredibly painful to witness.”

Due to these experiences, Curtis said, “I have been gradually stepping back from Hollywood for the past 30 years. I’ve been preparing to exit before I’m pushed out, to avoid the pain my family went through. I want to step away while I’m still welcome, not wait to be forced out.”

The star of Halloween also criticized the cosmetic industry, condemning what she describes as the “genocide” of several generations of women pressured into altering their appearances through the cosmetic and surgical industry.

“I’ve used the term ‘genocide’ deliberately because it’s powerful,” Curtis explained. “We’ve erased natural human beauty under the guise of enhancement, with countless predominantly women altering their looks with chemicals, surgeries, and fillers. This trend is even promoted by AI, with ‘filtered’ faces becoming the new ideal.”

She continued, highlighting the dangers of such beauty standards. “When I don’t use a filter, I’m real, but once you apply it, despite the appealing results, it’s hard not to question what we define as ‘better.’ ‘Better’ has become synonymous with artificial. There are numerous examples — which I won’t name — of public figures who are celebrated for these artificial enhancements.”

Previously, in a May interview on 60 Minutes, Curtis opened up about her regret over undergoing plastic surgery at 25 after a critical comment about her eyes during the filming of Perfect. “The surgery was something I regretted immediately,” she confessed.

“I’ve since become a vocal advocate encouraging women to embrace their natural beauty,” she added. “I tell them they are beautiful just as they are. Undergoing that procedure was a mistake for me.”
