Jamie-Lee Harper Admits to Animal Neglect and Suffering Over Several Months in 2022
Jamie-Lee Harper, a 36-year-old from Glenboig, Scotland, who claimed to be an animal enthusiast, avoided imprisonment despite being responsible for keeping 22 dogs in extremely poor and unsanitary conditions on a farm.
In November 2022, the dogs under Harper’s care were discovered in a deplorable state—matted, dirty, and lying on cold concrete floors covered in damp, feces-soiled bedding. The scene was described during a raid by inspectors from the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) who had responded to tips about the conditions at Acre Farm.
When SSPCA officials arrived, they found not just the appalling conditions but also rats freely roaming the premises. The dogs, ranging in age with the youngest being mere weeks old, were found scattered across stables, sheds, and an open kennel area.
In one particularly distressing finding, three dogs shared a single shed with just three urine-soaked blankets for bedding. Signs of physical distress were evident, with one dog limping and others showing injuries likely caused by fights amongst them.
Six cocker spaniel puppies about 10 weeks old were also found, sharing two bowls of water contaminated with feces and wood shavings. These puppies later tested positive for Giardia, a parasitic disease that can cause severe diarrhea and is spread through fecal contamination.
Additionally, a Great Dane and her very young puppies were discovered in a freezing part of the premises without any bedding, and two female Akitas were also found, one of which was limping badly and suffering from loss of fur.
Harper faced legal consequences at Airdrie Sheriff Court where she pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering and neglect to these animals between September 1 and November 24, 2022. Despite the severity of the neglect, Harper was not sentenced to jail time. Instead, she received a three-year ban on keeping dogs, a fine of £1975, one year of supervision, and was mandated to complete 100 hours of community service. Additionally, she is subject to a 7pm to 7am curfew for six months, enforced through an electronic tag.
Harper’s defense attorney explained that her client recognized her inability to manage the large number of dogs, especially following a broken ankle in June 2022 that purportedly made it difficult for her to maintain proper standards of care. He emphasized Harper’s previous commitment to animal welfare and her remorse over the situation.
However, the presiding judge highlighted discrepancies in Harper’s statements, noting her criticism of the SSPCA and veterinary authorities involved in rescuing the animals. Harper had insisted that she had done nothing wrong, a stance that the judge found particularly troubling given the evidence.
All the rescued dogs were transferred to a SSPCA Rescue and Rehoming Centre, where they received necessary care and many have since been rehomed.
