A 71-year-old man has been arrested and charged after a collision last October in Dumfries that injured three very young children. The case has been referred to the Procurator Fiscal as police continue enquiries into the incident on Pleasance Avenue.
What happened
The crash occurred at about 3:15pm on 13 October 2025. Three children — an eight-month-old and two toddlers aged 14 and 18 months — were struck and taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary for initial treatment before being moved to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.
All three children were subsequently discharged from hospital. An 18-year-old nursery employee also received medical attention after the incident.
- Location: Pleasance Avenue, Dumfries

- People injured: One eight-month-old, one 14-month-old and one 18-month-old; an 18-year-old nursery worker

- Police action: 71-year-old arrested and charged; matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal
Investigation under way
Police Scotland confirmed the arrest and said enquiries remain ongoing. Officers briefly closed the road after the collision so specialist investigators could examine the scene, and detectives previously asked local residents to come forward if they had dashcam footage or saw the incident.
Being reported to the Procurator Fiscal means prosecutors will now review the evidence and decide on any further legal steps.
Response from the nursery and community
The nursery expressed deep distress at the event, saying staff are cooperating with authorities and that children’s safety is their priority. Neighbouring residents and parents were shaken by the collision, with community leaders urging anyone with information to contact police to assist the inquiry.
Why this matters now: the charge and referral to prosecutors mark a key phase in the case. Witness accounts and any available video evidence could shape whether further charges follow, and the episode has prompted renewed attention on pedestrian and roadside safety for children in the area.
