Edinburgh Erupts: Police Update on Anti-Immigrant Protest Sparked by Knife Incident

By Benjamin Harrison

Law enforcement was present at a scheduled rally at an apartment complex where a supposed stabbing event occurred in Edinburgh.

Following an incident involving a knife, police provided updates on an anti-immigration protest at a residential building in Edinburgh where a man was arrested earlier in the week after two individuals sustained injuries.

The demonstrators, who were protesting against illegal immigration, openly criticized both the Scottish and UK governments as well as Police Scotland. The protest took place outside Cobbinshaw House in the Calder district on Friday night.

Video footage from the site depicted a large gathering of individuals crowding the area, with police maintaining a strong presence. Law enforcement personnel formed a barrier while several police vans with flashing blue lights were stationed nearby.

Among the protesters, many waved Scottish saltires and Union Flags, with one individual yelling “cowards” amidst the background noise of beeps and sirens. Other videos shared online showed music playing loudly through speakers, and some individuals used megaphones to speak to the crowd. In anticipation of the protest, Edinburgh Napier University decided to close its Sighthill campus and the ENGAGE sports center.

Police Scotland confirmed on Saturday that the protest ended without any arrests or reported injuries following their attendance at the event.

Chief Superintendent David Robertson stated, “On Friday, March 6, our officers were present at a scheduled event in Calder, Edinburgh. There were no injuries or arrests reported, and the groups eventually dispersed peacefully.”

This followed an incident on Monday, March 2, when armed police responded to reports of a man brandishing a knife around 8:25 AM in the Calder Gardens area. The standoff led to the injury of two people during the altercation.

The injuries reported included a man allegedly stabbed, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, and a woman who suffered a head laceration, believed not to have been caused by a bladed weapon.

Mustafa Kokoneh, aged 23, was later presented at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday, March 4, facing multiple charges including two counts of attempted murder and four counts endangering life. Additional charges against him included assault leading to severe injury and permanent impairment, breach of the peace, possession of a blade, carrying an offensive weapon, and vandalism. Kokoneh did not enter a plea and was detained for further examination, with a court appearance scheduled within the next eight days.

During the disturbance, police in full riot gear converged on the Cobbinshaw House tower block. Police dog handlers and drone operators were also deployed at the scene. An area cordon was set up, and the Scottish Ambulance Service dispatched three ambulances to the location. Furthermore, the nearby Sighthill Primary School at Calder Park was temporarily closed due to the incident.

On Tuesday following the incident, Police Scotland urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation about the “frightening” event and addressed some rumors circulating online.
