Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys Passes Away at 82
Brian Wilson, a founding member of the iconic rock band The Beach Boys, has passed away at the age of 82.
On Wednesday, Wilson’s family shared the news of his death on Instagram, revealing that he had been battling a neurocognitive disorder similar to dementia for over a year.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Brian Wilson,” the family stated. “At this moment, words cannot express our grief.”
The family’s post on Instagram was accompanied by a heartfelt request: “Please respect our privacy during this difficult time as we mourn. We understand that our loss is felt not just by us, but around the world. Love & Mercy.”
The Beach Boys: A Musical Legacy
The Beach Boys were formed in 1961, featuring Brian and his brothers Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Between 1962 and 1966, the band achieved remarkable success, charting 10 Top 10 hits and seven Top 40 hits, with Brian Wilson at the helm as the primary songwriter and producer.
Despite his success, Brian’s life was marred by mental health issues that stemmed from an abusive childhood. These issues affected his relationship with the band and led to multiple breakdowns, eventually causing him to step back from live performances and struggle with substance abuse.
In a challenging period of his career in 1982, Brian was let go from The Beach Boys. However, he managed to overcome his personal demons in the late 1980s, marking a resurgence in his career with several solo albums and acclaimed live performances of his works “Pet Sounds” and “Smile.”
Brian Wilson’s contributions to music were recognized with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 alongside The Beach Boys, and he was also honored in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000. He rejoined The Beach Boys for their 50th-anniversary tour, celebrating a milestone in the group’s history.
Brian Wilson leaves behind his wife, daughters Carnie and Wendy from his first marriage, and two adopted daughters, Daria and Delanie, from his second marriage.
The world has lost not just a legendary musician but a man who faced immense personal battles and came out with a legacy of unforgettable music that continues to influence the industry and resonate with fans around the globe.
