A Surprising Exit from “Saturday Night Live”
This past weekend, one of the most notable figures from Saturday Night Live made an unexpected departure from the show, and he has since opened up about his feelings regarding the exit.
In the most recent episode of SNL, which featured Ariana Grande, a co-star from his upcoming project Wicked: For Good, Bowen Yang appeared on the show for what would be his last appearance.
During his final act, Yang expressed his gratitude and affection for his time on the show, saying, “I just feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work here. I just wanted to savor it a bit longer, especially the people. I’ve genuinely loved every single individual involved here. They’ve all significantly supported me, especially my boss.” He then humorously revealed that his “boss” was the musical guest, Cher, who quipped in response, “Everyone thought you were a little too gay. But you know what? You’re perfect for me.”
Bowen Yang’s Reflective Farewell
Yang has been a part of the show since the 44th season in 2018, quickly becoming one of its standout stars.
Following his departure, Yang took to Instagram to share a heartfelt farewell to his colleagues and fans. In his post, he wrote, “I loved working at SNL, and most of all I loved the people. I was there during a time when many things in the world seemed futile, but being at 30 Rock showed me the worth of showing up anyway when you’re surrounded by people who make it worthwhile.”
He proceeded to thank a multitude of people including “friends and coworkers and hosts” like “celeste, sudi, will, alison, julio, fran, drez, bulla, marty, john, ben, jimmy, ceara, deetch, jake, asha, jack, auguste, tucker, kent, streeter, james, alex, jasmine, gary, and billy,” followed by “the crews, the pages,” and finally expressing gratitude towards SNL creator Lorne Michaels for “the job, the standard, and for bringing everyone at work together. They all deeply care about making sure people in the room, any room, are enjoying themselves. I can’t believe I was ever part of that.”
Yang further elaborated on his experiences, stating, “I’m grateful for every minute of my time there. I discovered a lot about myself (bad with wigs) and others (generous, vulnerable, hot). I learned that human error can be nothing but correct, that comedy is mostly logistics, and that it usually fails until it suddenly doesn’t, which is the best feeling. The show doesn’t go on because it’s ready, but damn, I hope I am.”
