Verónica Echegui Passes Away at 42
Verónica Echegui, a celebrated Spanish actress, has passed away at the age of 42.
Echegui succumbed to cancer last Sunday while receiving treatment at a hospital in Madrid, Spain, as reported by El País.
Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from prominent Spanish personalities, including actors like Antonio Banderas and political figures such as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. It was revealed that her illness was not widely known to the public.
Throughout her career, Echegui earned four Goya nominations, an accolade considered to be the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars. She collaborated with numerous renowned Spanish talents, including Carmen Maura from the film Volver and Gael García Bernal, known for his role in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old.
Echegui was also well-known to American audiences through her appearances in television series. She played a significant role in the Prime Video horror series Fortitude from 2015 to 2017 alongside Dennis Quaid and Stanley Tucci. Following that, she featured in the 2018 FX miniseries Trust with Donald Sutherland, Hilary Swank, and Brendan Fraser. Her most recent projects included roles in Netflix’s Intimacy and Apple TV+’s Love You to Death.
Antonio Banderas expressed his sorrow on Instagram, stating, “Today, Spanish cinema is mourning the passing of Verónica Echegui. My condolences to her family and friends. #RIP.”
The Prime Minister of Spain also expressed his condolences.
“I was deeply shocked by the news of Verónica Echegui’s passing, an actress with enormous talent and humility who leaves us far too young,” Sánchez stated in a Twitter/X post.
