Taylor Swift messages show strain with Blake Lively: unsealed texts reveal new details

By Emily Anderson

Newly released court records are offering more detail about the reported strain between Taylor Swift and Blake Lively.

As part of Lively’s ongoing legal dispute with her It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni, documents made public and reviewed by E! News include a string of messages exchanged between Lively and Swift that date to Dec. 4, 2024. Those texts reveal the two stars trying to navigate a recent rough patch in their friendship.

In the messages, Lively reached out to Swift with concern, saying she didn’t have a concrete reason to raise the issue but felt the need to check in. She admitted she’d been feeling like a “bad friend” after spending months focused on her own troubles and thanked Swift for being a supportive presence throughout. Lively added that her husband, Ryan Reynolds, had suggested she talk directly with Swift about what she was sensing in their relationship.

Lively told Swift she felt foolish and worried she sounded needy or awkward, especially since she couldn’t fully explain why she had this feeling. She emphasized that she simply wanted reassurance that everything was okay and wanted the chance to remedy anything she might have done unintentionally. Acknowledging Swift’s busy life and emotional load, Lively stressed she didn’t expect more from her friend than she could give.

Swift replied by acknowledging Lively wasn’t wrong to notice a change, but she downplayed the situation, calling it not a major issue. The singer explained she was feeling depleted on many fronts — and, with the Eras Tour nearing its end at the time, had been particularly worn out. Swift noted that while the controversy around Justin had been draining, she’d weathered similar situations before and knew how consuming they could be.

She went on to describe how some of Lively’s recent messages felt different in tone — polite and well-intentioned, yet impersonal. Swift compared a few of the texts to a mass corporate announcement sent to many people, saying it felt strange to critique how Lively had been communicating but that she missed the friend who used to speak with a darker, funnier, more familiar voice. Swift expressed empathy for what Lively has been enduring, including feeling unfairly attacked and needing to overexplain herself, and reminded her that their friendship was bigger than all of that.

That distance, Swift wrote, had created a bit of separation between them. She insisted Lively didn’t need to apologize and simply urged her to come back to being herself.

Lively answered with a playful, self-aware message, joking that she appreciated the feedback and that “headquarters” would review the concerns and respond. She then agreed with Swift’s observations, admitting she’d become overly cautious online and was composing texts the way she would write rather than how she would speak. Lively said she hadn’t realized it until Swift pointed it out, but she could see the difference. On top of that, she explained, she’d been “over-packaging” ordinary things because feeling so misunderstood had made her distrust her own judgment.

She apologized for behaving like a “stupid paranoid weirdo,” thanked Swift for pointing it out and for not making the matter bigger than it was, and expressed remorse directly to her friend.

Swift kept the tone light in her final reply, noting that Lively’s initial joking line had made her laugh.
