Raquel Escalante, a well-known TV presenter from Guatemala and previously titled Miss Intercontinental Guatemala, has passed away following a public battle with cervical cancer. She was 28 years old.

Her passing was confirmed by TV Aztec Guate, the network where she worked, in an Instagram post dated November 28th which highlighted some of her most joyful times at the company.

The network’s heartfelt message expressed, “Her charm, her joy, and that distinctive sparkle that she always carried with her made every moment spent with her truly special and unforgettable. Today, we say goodbye to not just a coworker, but a friend who has left a lasting mark on our hearts. Her smile, her vitality, and her dedication to her craft will keep motivating us every day.”

In 2021, Escalante was honored with the title of Miss Intercontinental Guatemala. In August 2024, she revealed that she had been hospitalized due to low hemoglobin levels. By October, her cousin disclosed through a GoFundMe page that she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer.

The GoFundMe campaign, which was set up to help cover her medical costs, detailed the severe aftermath of her surgery to remove the cancerous cells. She endured numerous side effects including kidney damage, gastrointestinal issues, and nerve damage in her spine. These complications necessitated blood transfusions, hemodialysis, among other treatments, and caused her excruciating pain, severely impacting her quality of life.

The fundraiser described the urgent need for financial assistance, stating, “We call upon all those with generous hearts to support her with her medical expenses, as Raquel’s condition is grave. She has been predominantly hospitalized since February, accruing substantial medical expenses. Her adoptive family has been supportive, yet some situations remain beyond our control.”

In May, Escalante posted a TikTok capturing some moments from her medical ordeal, with a caption that read, “Only God and my mother truly know everything I’ve endured.”
