During a routine vehicle clean-up at Glasgow’s police facility on Helen Street, officers suffered burns from a chemical wheel cleaner.
Two officers from the armed response unit required hospital care after sustaining chemical burns while cleaning their patrol vehicle.
The incident occurred using a potent alloy wheel cleaner at the Helen Street police facility in Glasgow on Sunday evening.
Reportedly, the officers were engaging in playful behavior during their night shift and inadvertently used the highly corrosive cleaner. The mishap has been escalated to the Professional Standards Department of Police Scotland for further investigation.
It was reported that the chemical caused burns on various parts of the officers’ bodies, including one officer’s lower back area.
According to a police insider, the chemical managed to penetrate their uniforms.
Both officers have since been discharged from the hospital. An insider mentioned, “There were talks about them messing around with hoses and although the police deny it was a water fight, their colleagues suggest otherwise. Both are now under investigation.”
“This incident could be likened to a scene from The Three Stooges, except it involves armed officers,” added the source.
The cleaner used is usually marked with clear hazard warnings to avoid skin contact.
A disciplinary investigation regarding this incident is currently ongoing, according to police sources.
Meanwhile, the incident has reportedly made the officers the subject of ridicule among their peers, causing frustration among some in the force.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed, “The incident has been referred to our Professional Standards Department for review.”
