Scarlett Johansson loses top box-office crown: Colin Jost breaks his silence

News that Zoe Saldaña has overtaken Scarlett Johansson as the top-grossing actress in Hollywood prompted a playful response from Colin Jost.

On the latest Weekend Update segment of SNL, Jost relayed the headline with a comic spin.

“Zoe Saldaña — starring in the new Avatar film — has moved past Scarlett Johansson to become the highest-grossing actress ever,” he announced. “Alright, let’s see what happens if you add in the box office from Scarlett’s husband’s movies.”

He then joked about the totals, saying that his wife’s box-office tally, previously $15.4 billion, fell to $15.1 billion after his films were factored in. The SNL audience burst into laughter as he teased, “It went down?”

Outside of his SNL work, Jost has acted in several movies, including How to Be Single, Coming 2 America, and The Bad Guys 2. He also co-starred with Johansson in Fly Me to the Moon.

In a 2025 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Jost spoke about the pair’s combined box-office presence.

“When you combine the two of us, I think we’re probably one of the top box-office couples, ever,” he said, adding that Johansson carries more of the weight but that together they could hold a notable record. He also quipped, “I basically only do number-one movies.”

Johansson and Jost married in 2020 and are parents to a son, Cosmo. Johansson also has a daughter, Rose, from her previous relationship with Romain Dauriac.
