Anna Camp is addressing the backlash regarding the 18-year age difference with her partner, Jade Whipkey.
The 42-year-old Pitch Perfect actress recently appeared on the red carpet with the 24-year-old stylist, Whipkey, at the Los Angeles premiere of her new film Bride Hard. Shortly after their public appearance, Camp responded to critics of their relationship’s age gap.
In a comment on an Instagram post that pointed out the age difference, Camp stated, “I’ve been in relationships with men my own age, and Jade has shown more maturity than any of them. We share more interests and can discuss everything and anything more freely than I have with others I’ve dated.”
She added, “Everyone has their own opinions, and I respect that. I send well wishes to everyone, particularly during this pride month.”
Despite Camp’s explanation, several individuals continued to express discomfort about the age difference. One commenter said, “I’m 40. The idea of being involved with someone 18 years younger never even crosses my mind. It’s as awkward for men as it is for women.” Another shared, “I’m in my mid-30s and struggle to see how I could have enough in common with a 20-year-old to start a relationship. What could we possibly share?”
Camp publicly confirmed her relationship with Whipkey in May after re-sharing a heartfelt Instagram Story from Whipkey that described Camp in poetic terms.
Prior to her relationship with Whipkey, Camp was married to her Pitch Perfect co-star Skylar Astin. The couple divorced in 2019 after less than two years of marriage.
Discussing the upheavals in her personal life at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in 2019, Camp shared, “It’s been simultaneously terrifying and freeing. I’ve undergone some major changes and have never felt more like myself. It’s a vulnerable place, but also incredibly empowering. I feel grounded and confident that my recent decisions are for the best.”
She elaborated, “I’ve learned that one can remain optimistic through major life changes and maintain kindness. Challenges can be overcome and can even lead to personal improvement.”
